Lots of people for some time have said that the current PC game market is in trouble. I think this is partially true (despite Starcraft 2). I think the PC gaming industry is in trouble, but I think there are several more reasons for this than what is commonly said out there. So, this is what I think is causing the issues:
Can I run it?: The simple fact that this website exists is not a good sign. Why do I need a website to say if my computer can run some game? Shouldn’t it be simple to see how well it should run? See what the system requirements are. There lies the problem; They are confusing as hell. You need a Core 2 Duo or better. Well, I have an AMD Phenom, am I better or worse? How about my graphic card? How do I know if my 4550 is better than an Nvidia? I don’t, and thus need a website to tell me if it is, which is not good, I think. It leads to confusion. That is why I think gaming people need to adopt the Windows Performance Index for the determining of how powerful your computer is. But, they can keep how much ram is needed, and operating system, as if you are going to put the effort in to game, you should at least know how much RAM you have, and what OS you are running. Just use it for GPU’s and CPU’s.
STEAM is not good enough because…..: DRM is needed in this world of easily steal-able PC games. So, what do companies do? They make up their own and make it a pain in the butt to make it work. Well, that’s just going to encourage me to steal it. Why don’t you use something like STEAM, or Battle-net and have an account for your assassins creed 2, and all other games made by you, that way you don’t have to worry about activating a game, and such, like if your computer were to be taken over by a virus. Not a good way to make sure people don’t steal it; make it hard to get it back.
Sloppy ports: Why are PC games always so far behind the 360/3 ports? PC always seems to be behind and not as good. Plug in a controller? The game thinks it’s a 360 controller (Mirrors Edge) and kind of freaks out a little. Sure, I could unplug it, but I don’t want to. Scale the game better! Have the ability to adjust the settings. Many games don’t allow this (Mass Effect allows it, and I appreciate them doing it).
And that’s it, for now. It just bothers me how nobody is actually TRYING to fix this.
