The PS3 finally got its self out of the hole it dug. I know it started doing this a while ago, but I felt like commenting on it now, because I can. So, what does the PS3 offer that the 360 does not? Well, I have a few things that I think are rather important:
• Free Netflix: Of course you have to pay Netflix, but you don’t have to pay Sony to do so on the PS3. On the 360, you do. Why is that? Is Netflix going through their servers? Why can’t Microsoft change that? They created an entirely new interface, and are working on an interface that goes off of what you do and move, why not allow the 360 to connect one more server? The ps3 is doing it somehow. I think it would be acceptable for the 360 to require a silver account through. I think that would be ok, as I bet Netflix is tied to one’s account. I don’t know, as I have not job and can’t afford such things.
• Free online play: This is a big one that often bothers me. But, I understand that some people say the now 60$ is worth it. Well, it may be, but I still think it would be nice if silver players got to play. Give them about 8 hours a week to play online every week, and let them play some, for the casual or the PC gamer who wants to give it a shot. Eight hours is not a lot of time, but maybe it could convert them, and give a counter point to what Sony is doing with their system.
• More Video Format Support: You can never have enough!
• Better DVD playback: Have you ever tried to play a DVD on the 360? The controller is terrible at it, and the controls change based on what you are playing back. Steaming something from your computer? Different. DVD playback? Different. Change it and make it less confusing. The PS2 got it right, and I often used it to play DVD’s back. It was simple, made sense, and worked well. Just rip that off the PS2 design, and that will solve your problem. I doubt Sony copyrighted the layout of the functions. May want to check that out first. I have a remote (because I’m crazy), and it works well.
Now, some (both of you who are reading this) may be thinking: What about Blu-Ray? I don’t think the Blu will be as important as Netflix will be. I see more people caring about Netflix (and other such services) and their DVD collection than their Blu ray collection. Connections are getting faster, and people are using their internet more and more. Sure, some people with slow connections (like me) may get Blu ray (unlike me) or they may just stick with DVD’s. Think less about the money, and more about the future. If Microsoft did that with Windows, we may be a little more secure now.
