Come on eWeek! Windows ME was worse than your remember!!!

http://www.eweek.com/c/a/IT-Infrastructure/10-Old-Products-That-Can-Be-Tweaked-to-Work-Today-827767/

I was reading eWeek the other day (because I get emailed from them) and I watched their slide show, as I get what seems like daily. The one I am talking about is “IT Infrastructure: 10 Old Products That Can Be Tweaked to Work Today”. So, I read it, as I normally do, and I was shocked at what I read. Slide 3 is Windows ME. Now, not everybody knows of windows ME, or the evil it contains! My family has never been a technology family, so our first computer was a 1996 windows 95 computer. It was good when we got it, but four years later, it was slow, rather slow. Then we get a computer in 2000, with Windows ME, and 128 MB’s of ram. For the next six years, I had to deal with memory leaks, and just the madness that was Microsoft trying to get as much life out of the 9X kernel as possible. Now, I do admit that system restore was nice, and did end up using it a few times, but that does not make up for the fact that it was a bad OS. It was only a year before XP came out, which had its own problems, but it got better. And if you were paying attention (which you might be), I said that I ran ME for six years, which meant I did not get XP until about 2006. During those years, I did not get iTunes, nor any newer programs, or good memory use. ME is known for its memory leaks, and just flaky stability. If you are going to update an OS, update Windows 98, or 95, not ME!

The same slide show also talks about the Apple Pippin. Read what they person wrote for this one (I’m not going to re-type it here). The system was a horrible failure, for several reasons. The was pre Jobs Apple, where they were not considered the next coming of what-ever-came-before, and were generally considered stupid and crazy. The Pippin ran Mac OS. Now, don’t confuse that with OS X, no. This was Mac OS 7, or maybe 6. None of that fancy full color and such for you! Maybe if they made it into a Apple 360 ,that would be cool, but that’s not really the pippin any more, it’s an Apple 360.

Another slide that is mentioned is the Dreamcast, where the writer says “one of those video game consoles that failed simply because it was too innovative for its time”. No, that is not why the Dreamcast failed! It failed because of several things, but I think the big ones were the Sega Saturn, and the Sony PS2. The Dreamcast did almost EVERYTHING right, but the Saturn did almost everything wrong. The Saturn was so bad (at least, not good enough) to tarnish the Sega name, and that is why nobody purchased the Dreamcast; they were afraid of it being bad. That, and the PS2, the current bestselling system ever, was about to launch. That and broadband was becoming popular, and the disks were easy to make copies of, and the controller was weird, and somewhat lack-luster third party support. But, some of that was not their fault. But, Windows ME is still one of the worst operating system every.
