I rather like STEAM, as I think it is a great piece of software that does little to get in the way, and adds a lot to the experience. But, I have a few minor ideas with what they could add. One of which is a status if the game runs well on Vista and Windows 7. I know the games all have their own system requirements, but STEAM started out compatible with Windows 98, and some of their games require Windows 95/98, and don’t always mention Vista/7. I think it would be very nice if the nice people over at Valve went through their catalog of games and made their own personal notes if the game ran on Windows Vista/7 x86 and x64. Make it their own official status of the game.
Also, something that bothers me very much. I think Valve should also note, while checking if the game runs on the varous new OS’s, if the game supports widescreen. I have a widescreen monitor, and I know that 4:3 works on widescreen, but not that well, and often has issues with my desktop afterwards. Ands its hard to tell. Deus Ex 1 is widescreen compatible, but not Deus Ex 2. Also, sometimes programs I had docked to the side of my screen (Digsby, Pidgin, Google Desktop) also mess with my games. If I click in the wrong space, then I got back to my desktop, and I’ve got to tell you, that is rather annoying.
I know I keep on picking on STEAM and Valve, but I use their software so much, and I like it a lot, that I just have a few ideas on how to make it better.
