Game of the Year during the Summer?

I rather like STEAM. I think it’s a great way to purchase games, and keep games up to date. I think its an amazing tool to counter piracy (which rather hurts PC gaming in general) and the excuse of “its to hard to play the game if I buy it normally”. I’m looking at you assassins creed 2! But, STEAM’s biggest sale is during the winter/new year period.  The same time that the games of the year are announced. Well, I see one small problem with that; How do I know which games stood out amongst all the games this year until the publications that I trust say that they stand out? Well, this is what I think

What if the publications (websites/what-not) made their game of the year choices during the summer? Then, during the time when less games are released, they could devote more time to game of the year, and let more people know what is they think the best is. Now, this would require that they also analyze the time that was technically last year, but I think most gamers (especially PC gamers) could make that connection and accept it. This would give something for websites to advertise and show off during the summers where not much is released (it used to be this way, I don’t remember if it still is though).

Now, last summer STEAM had a sale during the summer poking fun at all the bad stuff that could happen while out side (a horrible place of bugs and sharks and fires). Well, come could say that this sale would be good enough so websites could just stick with the winter/end of year awards. Well, sure, they could, but I’m going to refer you to my comment about summer being boring. Then, when winter comes around again during STEAM’s bigger sale, people would be very prepared for when that happens.
