Why do I use opera? Well, it is a rather fast web browser, and it doesn’t use up as much RAM as Chrome did for my needs. I use Opera to check my email. What I like to do is keep it open, and load up to my Gmail, so I can use it like thunderbird. I used to use chrome to do that, but one day I discovered that it uses up large amounts of my RAM. But, you may want to ask how much RAM I have. Well, I have 4 GB’s of RAM, and a graphic card. So, when I see my RAM meter go down SEVERAL percentage points when I close “offline mail” that runs through Chrome, I’m a little confused. Why would a web browser, that is only displaying one webpage, and has ONLY displayed really one since launch on my computer, need about 200MB’s of ram. Now, I can understand if I has several tabs open, as Chrome does that, and it is slick that one tab will not kill everything. I think Chrome could use a “simple” option, where it only loads up one process, doesn’t include anything that it does not need, and only display that one page. Google makes Gmail, why not make a browser (or application) that only goes to Gmail, and operates Gmail as fast as possible. Or, if Google is feeling really special that day, make it the Google APPS app for desktops, so it would display Gmail, Google Calendar, and maybe Google DOC’s.
But, back to Opera. In my quick search, I found opera to be one of the web browsers that uses up a barely acceptable amount of ram (given, sea monkey uses less, but I decided against it, for some reason, I can’t remember what it was though…) and is slick. It loads up fast, it runs the page rather fast, and works rather well. Although, it does use up a lot of RAM, and is Opera, the internet’s make-fun-of web browser. But, to be fair, it is nice. It is fast. But….wait, I just checked my task manager, and it uses up more RAM than Chrome…… Interesting. Maybe I should try Sea Monkey again.
Nah, Opera is good for what I use if for. Gmail is a complicated web site, and Chrome uses up about as much RAM as Opera, if not more just to display that page in its little desktop application thing. But, FireFox is still my default for general web fun. But, who knows, maybe when Xmarks gets Opera, we'll see.
