Companies are always trying to be the next twitter. The next company that is spontaneously popular, and can help guide the world into a stage with real time search. Well, apparently twitter is doing this, and now Digg is doing the following/followers thing with the new Digg.
Well, I think Digg will manage better than Facebook did with its Twitter rip off. Why? Because Digg is not Facebook; Digg is designed to allow people to share what they think is cool, what they “dig”. See what Mr. Kevin Rose did there? Well, turning Digg into a super twitter is a great idea. You see, Twitter is only able to perform the holy grail of “real time search” when people tweet links to each other. But, that’s what Digg does so well; having people share links between their friends and perfect strangers, and the people who are on Digg.
Also, Digg is able to be more open, because that is the entire point of Digg; share what you find cool with other people. Facebook tried to do this, and failed. Why? Because Facebook is not designed to be open and share with EVERYBODY. Facebook is like a small personal Digg, where you “like” things and your friends see what you “like” and such and if they like it, then they can propagate it to other people, thus creating a small Digg. But, Facebook tried to do the open thing where everybody could see what you “like” and not what you “digg”. I could get into the nitty gritty of the difference between the general meaning of digg and like, but I choose not to, as I care little.
So, will the new Digg succeed where Facebook and Twitter have failed? Will the new Digg be able to get lots of new data and links that will rise to the top and show that they are superior to other links? I think it will do rather well, as it already has the frame work, a trusted name, and Kevin Rose is not a stupid.
