I am a firm believer of Microsoft. I think they are a good company (although, every company has a little evil in them) and their products are good, I think they have lost some of their way. Apple is beating Microsoft like crazy, and has yet to respond in kind.
The iPhone has no real Microsoft competition. The kin was recently canceled, and Microsoft is left on Windows Mobile 6.5. I know mobile 7 is coming out soon-ish, but who knows for certain if that is going to even hurt the iPhone. If I were Microsoft, I would throw as many resources as I could behind mobile 7, and get that out the door as soon as possible, and get some app developers on your pay role, so you know there will be apps on day 1, which will help with the user experience. Some may say that Microsoft has little to fear from the iPhone, but I think they have more to fear than many think. If users realize that Apple makes computers, and they are in love with their iPhones, then people may convert to the Macintosh at home and business and that could spell disaster, and cause Microsoft to become the new Pre-Jobs-Apple. And I don’t want to see that.
The iPod is also killing Microsoft. Although the Zune has been out for a while, it has made little impact on much of anything. Microsoft can’t compete directly, as Apple people are not going to abandon the iTunes ecosystem. No, Microsoft needs to build up a brand. Has there ever been a Zune commercial? Not to the same degree as the iPod, or any at all. I can’t recall seeing any. So, I would bring back the Zune 8 and call it the Zune Classic – 8. The idea being that the classic Zunes cost less, and could get some people who don’t want to spend the money on an iPod, but still want a quality music player.
Another thing that bothers me about the Zune is the fact I HAVE to use the Zune software. I think its good software, but I enjoy using WMP12 more. So, I think Microsoft should let people use WMP12 to at least sync the music. I can understand not using it for the wireless sync, and stuff like that, as WMP12 does not have that ability. Give people the option, and use that to your advantage, as Apple requires you to use iTunes for the iPods and other “I” products. But, that’s just me; I own a Sansa Fuze, and I am rather happy with it. I have media money down load my podcasts, and have WMP12 sync them over. I’m just thinking about Microsoft.
